Blood transfusions are required for patients undergoing organ transplant, treatment  for cancer and similar ailments, accident and burns victims. However many of  these patients succumb to their injuries due to lack of  blood.

Only half the amount of blood required is collected at present. Most people avoid donating blood because they are scared of getting infected , that the medical procedure will be painful and they believe it will cause some weakness. However, most of these fears are unfounded.

Blood can be donated once every three months . Every unit of  blood donated gets replaced by the body within a week. Most hospitals used sterilized equipment, so there is no fear of infection. The medical procedure for blood donation usually takes about half an hour.
